Our Story

A Family Standard, Carried Forward

The standard behind Purely Seasoning was established long before the brand itself existed.

In 1882, Esther Powers Piper was born in Ireland. As a child, she immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island before her family eventually settled in Buffalo, New York. She grew up in a culture defined by restraint and resourcefulness, where ingredients were valued and food was prepared deliberately.

By the early 1950s, seasoned salt had begun appearing on grocery shelves. Esther believed it could be done better. Not louder. Not heavier. Simply more balanced.

Working from fresh ingredients, many grown in her Buffalo garden, she developed what became known within the family as Aunt Essie’s seasoned salt. The ingredients were prepared by hand, dehydrated together, and milled to a fine blend. It appeared at nearly every family gathering.

It was never created for retail. It was made for the table.

Across Generations

In 1969, Esther traveled to Hawaii to help care for her niece, Sally Treanor, who was living there while her husband was stationed with the military. Sally’s pregnancy had become difficult, and Esther, then eighty-four years old, crossed the country to be there.

The seasoning traveled with her.

In Hawaii, Esther and Sally Treanor continued refining the recipe together. Measurements were clarified and the method documented, making the blend more precise without changing its character. As the family relocated from state to state through military assignments, the seasoning remained a constant in each new home. When they eventually returned to Western New York, the recipe returned to Buffalo with them, unchanged in its standard.

What endured was not simply a recipe, but a standard.

Balanced. Intentional. Consistent.

Refinement Without Compromise

The original preparation relied on fresh ingredients dehydrated together, a method that was not commercially scalable. If the recipe was to endure beyond family kitchens, it required disciplined translation.

The method was carefully quantified and refined into a dry formulation that preserved the original balance while ensuring consistency jar after jar. This translation was deliberate and exacting, undertaken to protect the integrity of the original while preparing it for modern production.

That refined standard became the foundation for Purely Seasoning.

In 2020, the brand was formally launched by Sally’s grandson to carry the family’s standard into modern kitchens.

The philosophy remained unchanged.

Seasoning should enhance what is already good, not compete with it.

The Purely Standard

Purely is built on a simple standard: restraint, balance, and reliability. Each formulation reflects the same benchmark established decades earlier in Buffalo: depth without excess, structure without noise.

All-natural ingredients.
No artificial additives.
Three blends developed with intention: Original Seasoned Salt, Buffalo Bite, and Himalayan Rub.

From a family table in the 1950s to today’s kitchens, the objective remains constant.

Preserve the original standard.
Refine it with discipline.
Deliver it consistently.

Seasoning, refined.
